Devoted Dog guards owner’s body after fatal road accident in Queensland
“A SCRUFFY bitser dog called Moja was hailed a hero yesterday after sticking by his dead master’s side for two days and guiding rescuers to the hidden spot where the Queensland man crashed his car.”
….”Police, family, friends and two AGL rescue helicopters began searching, but with a 1000sq km radius to cover, trying to find the white Nissan utility was like looking for a needle in a haystack.
But on Saturday a woman from a farmhouse near Curra decided to investigate a dog barking for hours on end.
She found the crash site – and Moja sitting next to Mr Drew’s body beside the vehicle.”

Extinct Walking Bat Found; Upends Evolutionary Theory
“Scientists had long thought that the lesser short-tailed bat evolved its walking preference independently.
Since the bat’s native habitat lacks predators, researchers reasoned that—much like flightless birds on isolated islands—the bat had adapted to its safer surroundings in part by walking.
But the discovery of fossils of a now extinct walking bat in northwestern Queensland, Australia, suggests that the modern-day bats descended from 20-million-year-old Australian relatives.
“We were amazed to find they were virtually identical to the bats in New Zealand today,” said study leader Sue Hand, a paleontologist at the University of New South Wales in Sydney.”

Animal groups in court over Helmsley fortune
“Three of the country’s largest animal welfare groups on Monday accused the trustees of Leona Helmsley’s estate of a “scheme to deprive dog welfare charities” of their stake in the real estate baroness’ fortune. They filed a petition in Manhattan Surrogate Court arguing that Helmsley, who died in 2007, specified in her will that her multibillion-dollar estate should be used to help dogs, and the trustees disregarded those wishes.”

Baby Bats Babble Like Human Infants
“Baby bats babble just like newborn human babes, a new study finds.
Babbling is thought to be a kind of vocal play that provides human infants a chance to train their vocal tract muscles in preparation for speech and to practice combining the syllables they will use as adults. Humans begin babbling at about 7 months of age.”

‘World’s oldest’ orangutan dies :(
Posted
A Sumatran orangutan, thought to be the world’s oldest, has died in Miami at the age of 55, a zoo spokesman said.
Nonja, who was born in the wild on the Indonesian island of Sumatra in June 1952, was found dead yesterday morning, Miami Metro Zoo spokesman Ron Magill said.
He said a necropsy had been performed and that a small mass of blood had been found on Nonja’s brain, pointing to a tumour or aneurism as the likely cause of death.
Mr Magill said one other Sumatran orangutan had lived until the age of 57. But Nonja was believed to be the oldest surviving great ape of her kind in the world, both in captivity and in the wild, he said.
Most of the animals die before they reach their mid-40s, according to Mr Magill, who said Nonja had mothered five offspring.
“She was a grande dame and I think she knew it,” he said.
Nonja was shipped to Miami from a zoo in Holland in 1983 and her name means “girl” in Dutch, Mr Magill said.
According to the Sumatran Orangutan Society, the species has been classified as critically endangered by the World Conservation Union and could become extinct in the wild in less than 10 years. There were 7,300 Sumatran orangutans in the wild in 2003, the group said.
