The Book of Were-Wolves New Edition

Members of the The Therian Temple’s Ordo vir Bestia have just published a book version of the 19th-century were-wolf text, “The Book of Were-Wolves”, in both paperback and hardcover editions.

Written in 1865 by a British Theologian and Hymn-composer (he composed the well-known hymn “Onward Christian Soldiers”), this text delves into the history of beliefs and traditions surrounding human-animal transformations and related ideas.

Far from being a “factual document”, “The Book of Were-wolves” is a look into the mystical and magical esoteric ideas and lore about man’s “Inner Beast” that were prevalent in the world of the late 1800s.

One can clearly see the basis for the myriad Hollywood Film-versions of the “Wolf-Man” in the details of folkloric poems and traditions.

The research compiled in Rev. Baring-Gould’s text paint a unique picture of a mystical 19th-century world where monsters are very real and believed-in.

Luckily, the helpful hymn-composer turned literary Good Samaritan is there to guide you through this archaic and frightening world of wolf-men, vampires, cannibals and murderers.

“The Book of Were-Wolves” is a must-read for anyone interested in human-animal transformations, folklore, or even just monster movies.

Full Wolf Moon

Jan. 22, 8:35 a.m. EST — Full Wolf Moon. Amid the zero cold and deep snows of midwinter, the wolf packs howled hungrily outside Indian villages. It was also known as the Old Moon or the moon after Yule. In some tribes this was the Full Snow Moon; most applied that name to the next moon.

Animals line up at Mexico City churches for annual blessing

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) – A chihuahua in sunglasses, a tiny albino mouse and a turtle were among the animals lined up at Catholic churches across Mexico City on Thursday for an annual blessing to mark Saint Anthony the Abbott’s feast day.

In a tradition carried out each year in a handful of Catholic countries, Mexicans dressed up pets in vibrant frocks and tied ribbons on their ears so they could be sprinkled with holy water by a priest reading a special animal prayer.

………
Franciscan monks brought the animal blessing to Mexico during Spanish colonial rule.

The tradition marks the anniversary of the death of Saint Anthony the Abbott, a 4th century Egyptian Christian who gave his inheritance to the poor and lived a spiritual monastic life in the desert with only animals for company.

He was later made a patron saint of animals, like the better known Saint Francis of Assisi.

“Living together with animals is the most beautiful thing,” said Father Miguel Monroy, who said he avoids letting the animals inside San Fernando, a pretty 18th century Baroque church, because they tend to fight and leave puddles.

“The blessing is to protect them and keep them in good health,” he said, adding that he once blessed a couple of iguanas and a three foot (1 meter) crocodile.
